雞與蛋
有句老話， 「雞先定蛋先」，英文係Which came first, the chicken or the egg?套諸平日生活，是用來比喻或辯論事情難論先後優次、輕重緩急，以及因果關係，兜兜轉轉，就像一個vicious cycle（惡性循環） 。簡單道來， 就是個chicken-and-egg problem，雞與蛋孰先的問題，or situation，或情況。
A chicken-and-egg situation: A situation in which it is impossible to say which of two things existed first and which caused the other one. 說不出兩者誰先存在，及彼此間的因果關係的一種情況。
另一句有關蛋的常用俚語， 是Youcan’t make an omelette without breaking eggs， 直譯係「要弄奄列， 先得破蛋。」要譯做日常話，下面幾句，可以嗎？
1. 又要馬兒好，又要馬兒不吃草。
2. 未學行，先學走。
3. 巧婦難為無米之炊。
4. 沒有免費午餐。
5. 食得鹹魚抵得渴。
6. 有失必有得。
7. 凡事皆有代價。
事實是，全部都不大對。頭5 個，像是根本誤解了原裝話的意思。只有第6 及7的句子，可以拉上點關係。但「有失必有得」，多令人聯想give and take；而「凡事皆有代價」，就見No pain, no gain 的意思重一點了。
You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs， 主旨是要成功達到目標，過程中須破壞、放棄甚或傷害一些人事物，有籲人行事要果斷之意。中文類同的有「沒有破壞，哪有建設」。其他的，就得小心不要想多了。
仲有一句蛋話，常用但好容易錯，話人臉上有蛋，egg on face，是自嘲或笑人說了蠢話做了蠢事， 「衰咗後， 畀人掟蛋」， being embarrassed （ 尷尬） ，being slightly insulted（少少受辱），往往包含自取其辱，用廣東話講，即「自己」。
● I was so wrong. Now I have egg on my face. 我錯得離譜，如今面目無光（自己攞嚟）。
都留意到吧，egg on my face，不是anegg，也不是eggs，淨講egg 就好。另例：
● He got egg on his face after saying he could easily do 50 push-ups, and then giving up after doing just 20. 他真醜怪（畀人噓）——之前話可以好容易做50 次掌上壓，但做了不過20 下，就吃不消了。
