加拿大多倫多9月起實施《禁止藏有、銷售及食用魚翅》附例，理由是魚翅可能對市民健康、安全、經濟、社會及環境構成不良影響。當地華人社團「維護公義聯盟」狀告多倫多市政府無權訂立魚翅禁令，上周五勝訴。

安大略省最高法院法官James Spence宣判，指割鰭棄鯊不人道，但吃魚翅是否危害瀕危物種或民眾健康有極大爭議、市政府從沒禁止其他族裔的食品或衣着、此附例超出市政府權限，基於多項理由，法院裁定魚翅禁令無效。

判決必定引起漣漪效應，安大略省另一城市密西沙力已打算把當地魚翅禁令發還市議會討論。

魚翅在華人社會有價有市，政府能否立法禁售禁吃，問題複雜，但官方至少應該樹立榜樣。中國是全球魚翅最大進口國家，內地傳媒報道，國務院機關事務管理局決定了，3年內明文規定政府機關公務接待禁吃魚翅。多年來，香港政府拒絕承諾官宴不吃魚翅，堅稱不宜制訂指引規定公費宴會菜式，何其迂腐。
