麵包與石油
美國進步中心(Center for American Progress)與兩個機構於今年2月聯合發表一份論文集《阿拉伯之春與氣候變化》(The Arab Spring and Climate Change)，分析氣候變化與世界政局的關係。
論文集指出，2010至2011年間，中國發生百年一遇旱情，加上俄羅斯、加拿大、澳洲等國高溫或洪水氾濫，導致小麥短缺，價格飛漲。全球九大小麥進口國皆在中東，其中七國在2011年爆發人民抗爭，這些國家的人民平均花費收入超過35%購買糧食，在發達國家這比例不到10%。製作麵包所需的小麥價格暴升令這些中東人民生活更艱苦，引發革命浪潮。敘利亞和利比亞因氣候變化嚴重旱情，天然水源匱乏，大量農民牧民失去生計，加劇社會動盪。
《地球是平的》作者Thomas Friedman在《紐約時報》專欄藉上述論文集提醒世人，需要全世界集體行動，減緩氣候變化，可是阿拉伯國家依然反對降低石油燃料補貼。
農業大國固然望天打卦，直接受氣候變化影響；GDP不靠農業的石油大國也不可能獨善其身，應以阿拉伯之春為鑑，就算自私地為了鞏固政權，長治久安，亦有必要熱心參與應付氣候變化。
