Cheesy, cheeky
有兩個在今日英語世界常用的字，我們的年輕人即使大學畢業了，都未必會從課堂或教科書學會。說的，是cheesy 與cheeky。Cheesy，連繫上cheese，芝士。That’s acheesy pizza，那是個芝士味濃的意大利薄餅。卻是，除了放諸食物時多是好話，其他時候，cheesy 可帶近乎鋪天蓋地的貶意。最泛泛的中文對等語，也許就是「肉麻當有趣」。
Cheesy 可指廣東話口語的老套corny、俗tacky、好誇loud、懶傷感maudlin，總之就是令人覺得「痺」， 好lame， simplyuncool； 隨之也就有好勉強（trying toohard）、夾硬至生硬的意思。
? That’s a cheesy person. 這人（肉麻而）老套。
? That’s a cheesy movie. 那套電影「懶」感人。
又譬如說，有人認為Celine Dion 的歌很cheesy，是指出盡氣力要感動人，而非動人—— “I want you to be moved” instead ofmoving you.
And all clichés are cheesy. Cliché 是法文字，讀klee-shay，解老生常談。人云亦云的話嘛，自然老套了。西式的cheesy 句子有：Am I dead? ‘Cos this must be heaven! 我死了嗎？因為這裏肯定是天堂！
另有：問： What do you call cheese that’s notyours? 不是你的芝士叫什麼？
答：Nacho (Not your) cheese!這對答除了cheesy，亦屬cheeky 之作。Cheeky 這字，負面意思解老着臉皮，厚顏（但未至於無恥）丶「唔怕醜」以至「唔知衰」。
? You want your pay doubled? That’s rathercheeky of you. 你想薪水加倍？臉皮厚了點吧。
? That’s a cheeky child. 那是個賴皮的孩子。
而作正面表達，cheeky 是being brash 大着膽子、being offensively bold 不怕得罪地勇敢，帶點cocky 得戚之態。
? I was being cheeky. I quite deliberatelyasked that embarrassing question. 我作個厚顏狀，非常故意地問那條尷尬的問題。
Cheesy 通常屬閒散場合用語，cheeky 就正規得多：
? He said, with a cheeky grin, “We’ll neverknow, will we?” 他帶着賴皮的笑容說︰「這個我們永不會知道，對不對？」
