Choice—搶手、closure—了結
同學們，有沒有另買一本小小的電話簿？
不，不是用來記人名和號碼，而是用來做英文生字簿。像上周談的紅蘿蔔一筆，carrot即使不算是生字，但carrot 在英文中等於甜頭、好處、着數，若之前不認識，最好還是抄下C for carrot，幫助記憶。
今天再跟大家談兩個C 字頭的字︰ C forchoice，C for closure。
這兩個字看起來很淺嘛， choice 是tochoose（選擇）的名詞，closure 是to close（關上）的名詞，彷彿沒什麼大不了。仍然要談是因為這兩個字就像芸芸英文淺字，卻別有用法，即另有意思，不可不知。
The property is in a choice location. 那個物業在人人趨之若鶩的「搶手」地段。Choice，名詞作形容詞用，解優質、「高一線」至無以尚之的意思。
注意上述的choice location，不一定指城郊一類高尚區域。有關物業若是間小食店，在本市， 銅鑼灣、旺角等才真正是店主「恨」的生意點，真正的choice location。
We ordered a choice dish. 我們點了一道名菜。
這個choice，有廚師推介的、或膾炙人口的意思，總之就是好出名。
The fashion designer launches his ownchoice collection. 那時裝設計師推出自己的精選系列。
這裏的choice，回歸到選擇，說的是當事人自己的精選。
Closure 通常淨用做名詞，在商業社會除了關閉，更有關門大吉的意思。另一個用法，是說希望事情有個closure，有個了結，有個了斷， 常用於警方的懸案（coldcases）。看下面這句新聞標題「玩」C 字開頭的字︰The cold case is coming closer to closure.
這句話，是說快破案了。
下面的closure，就成了動詞︰The debate was closured. 辯論結束，投票開始。這個closure 特別用於（ 政治） 議會，是藉表決終止辯論的一個方法。留意美式串法是cloture ︰Let’s cloture the discussion. 我們終止討論，投票吧。
