八九之後，面對九七大限，我的父母決定移民加拿大。因為要繼續搵食，我被送到多倫多以北約個多小時的一家寄宿學校讀書。往後五年的中學生活，徹底豐富了我的人生。

那是一家由蘇格蘭人創立的男校，課餘穿著蘇格蘭裙及一身紅色軍服當Cadet參加步操早成為我們的特色。透過訓練與考試，男孩們可以從最基層的小兵 一路晉升至領導層。那時不惜考試出貓，不過為了當上中尉後會獲得佩劍，對格言「Dileas Gu Brath」(Gaelic，蘇格蘭語之一，意即Faithful Forever)求甚解。當年常不明白為何校長老師們總愛抬出死人：標榜兩次大戰時舊生中有共過千人參戰，當中百多人為加拿大捐軀。人長大了回望，才參 透那是捍衛國家自由的一種忠誠。

中學年代適逢魁北克省獨立公投，來自英語區的歷史老師將整段恩怨從頭到尾講述一遍，當中包括英系如何欺負法語系。那段時間校方還請來了兩派講者分享 理念，讓男孩們知道國家大事原來不用喊打喊殺。加拿大式處理國家分裂，洽好與之後1996年台灣首次總統大選形成強烈對比，最少前者來得便宜，畢竟節省了 一批導彈費。

加拿大教曉我，教育的本質不只是分數與大學錄取信。在那片陽光普照綠草如茵之間，紅葉遍地大雪紛飛之時，我們還有保守立國之本不被侵犯之責任、保障 弟兄之間不和時選擇離開之權利。我慶幸年輕時只有走堂沒有罷課，只有掛念鄰校女生而不用為家國大事操心，那是先輩們用鮮血及寬容換來我輩自由安定的奢侈。 今天香港的學子們，為了一個更公平的制度，正抵受著劣質的口誅筆伐與反智的冷嘲熱諷，換來的，難道就是你一句「who cares」?
