Shxt 與Sheet
有人曾在公開發言之際，把sheets 講成shxts，即場惹來一有識之士的批評及取笑。那番嘲弄，卻到底屬政治而不是語文笑話。常常提醒年輕人，不要笑人家講錯英文，因為這很容易構成自身壓力，於是淪為齊齊少講少錯、不講不錯。
但是，英文的長短音，卻真需注意。因為粵語每個字的讀音就是一個音節，沒有英文的長短音，有些人講英文時或者就會不自覺地傾向把短音讀做長音；又或因為知道這個弊病，掉過頭來，明明要講sheet 都變成shxt。總之就容易變成ship / sheep 不分、slip / sleep 一樣。
清楚記得， 那一年讀中三， 英文教師Mrs Patel 教這長短音事宜，包括pip 相對peep、sip 相對seep。When the teacher came to “beach”, I blurted out “bxtch”. She immediately tut-tuted at me. 老師立刻來嘖嘖連聲。
上述兩個有交叉的字，在學校都給視為髒話或粗話，卻又真是短i 與長ee 發音分別的好例子。多講一次，發音不準本身不是大問題，但惹人誤會就是大麻煩了。譬如說，你會叫人sit， 但正常情下不會請人shxt。
要改善，可多念一些類似six sheep on a ship 的急口令，多講自然習慣。要學好外語發音，今日比舊時容易，只需一按，指導網站多的是，示範caught & cot、cart & cut 等的分別。
而把immediately 講成immeee-jit-ly；how do you say 變成howjsay，有問題嗎？一點也沒有。於是，究竟不過是發音不準抑或根本讀錯，有時很難定奪，因為一些英文字的讀法確實出人意表。
美國的匹茲堡，與蘇格蘭的愛丁堡，中文都係「堡」。Pittsburgh 讀Pitts-burgh，但Edinburgh 卻讀Edinb’raa。
大多數西方人都知道， Pittsburgh and Edinburgh don’t rhyme，若我們不懂得這個，人家都會理解，所以不必過分介意。當然知道就更好。
但以下這些-ough 尾的字，日日都用，就不能夠淨怪拼音問題，要好好掌握，避免出錯。

● tough：tuff
● enough: e-nuff
● cough：koff
● plough: plau
● dough : doe
● though : thoe
● hiccough : hiccup
有友來說， 尚有t 字尾的ought、thought、drought（旱災，讀drout），還有borough？這個，英國人說buh-rah，美國人講bur-ro，太亂腦了，所以不贅。
