Civic Party Expresses Deep Concern over the Remand in Jail for Publishing an Obscene Article Pending Further Police Investigation
Civic Party is deeply concerned about the remand in jail for 8 weeks of a man charged with one count of publishing an obscene article pending further police investigation. The unusual denial of bail for an offence of this nature puts in question whether the right to liberty has been unjustifiably infringed.
Civic Party fully shares the public’s outrage at the recent outbreak of spreading by internet indecent and obscene photographs. We support police investigation in order to apprehend and punish the perpetrators according to law. However, the way the police has acted in the present case has aroused widespread concern and confusion about the law.
We are particularly concerned about the priority the police give to different complaints by different people. Notably recent complaints on the unjustifiable strip search of demonstrators detained by the police have yet to be fully investigated by the police. This would inevitably give rise to the perception that there is one law for the rich and famous and another for the rest of the community.
We call upon the Commissioner of Police to clarify his position and respond to the public’s concern.
