劉曉波先生長期為中國民主和人權事業奮鬥，2008年，劉曉波聯同其他中國知識份子發起《零八憲章》，表達中國實現民主憲制、追求自由、保障人權、落實平等、建立共和等願景。《零八憲章》代表著人類世界的普世價值、文明社會堅守的信念。
2010年10月8日，諾貝爾委員會將今屆和平獎頒授給劉曉波，讚揚他「為爭取中國基本人權而進行的長期且非暴力的努力」，這既是中國民主運動的鼓舞，也是人類普世價值的勝利。
泛民主跟立法會議員在Facebook 內建立群組，邀請全球各地的公民，一起加入要求中國政府立即釋放劉曉波的行列，向中國政府表達清晰的要求：立即無罪釋放劉曉波先生，讓他與妻子劉霞團聚，一起前往挪威接受諾貝爾委員會2010年12月10日頒發的和平獎，並保證劉曉波領獎後自由回國，讓全球人民共同見証劉曉波的獻身精神和高尚情操。
